Major: Conservation and Resource Studies

"I conquered my fears of the ocean, flying in a plane, being away from home, etc. I now feel unstoppable and ready to travel the world even if it's on my own. Additionally, taking part in a culture other than my own was refreshing and eye-opening. It's amazing to discover different foods, traditions, and lifestyles."

What led you to study abroad? Why did you choose your country/program?

I've always wanted to study abroad because my knowledge of the world was limited to the Bay Area. I had never travelled outside of California, let alone the United States, and I felt ready to explore how other countries approach conservation in particular. I chose to study in Costa Rica because of its rich biodiversity and its numerous conservation efforts. I wanted to experience all of these things firsthand.

What was the most interesting cultural experience you had abroad?

The most interesting cultural experience I had abroad was making artisanal jewelry with a local artist. It was really interesting to see how much work goes into a small item and the whole process of perfecting it.

What was the biggest challenge/concern of your study abroad experience? How did you respond?

The biggest challenge I faced during my study abroad experience was having to walk a few miles every night during beach patrols. I did not think I was physically prepared for this, but I persevered by having a positive attitude and reminding myself that my efforts would contribute to sea turtle conservation. Also, my peers supported and motivated me throughout.

Describe a typical day for you abroad.

A typical day for me abroad consisted of waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning, attending lectures and discussions about sea turtle biology and ecology, and participating in cultural immersion activities. One special morning, we woke up at 5 to dig on the beach and investigate egg patterns. At night, I would walk for many miles along the Ostional beach to record sea turtle nesting patterns and behaviors. This happened between the hours of 10pm to even 4am!

What coursework did you take while abroad? How did courses abroad compare with Berkeley classes?

My coursework consisted of sea turtle biology and ecology in different parts of the world. In addition, I learned about local organizations whose main focus is conservation. The coursework was very interactive and enriching, I would say that I prefer them over Berkeley classes because it took place outdoors!

What was the most memorable/meaningful aspect of your time abroad?

The most memorable aspect of my time abroad was the amount of biodiversity I was surrounded by where ever I was. When walking on the street, I would see monkeys, lizards, butterflies, and crabs! It was definitely a place that felt alive and hearing the crickets at night made it even more memorable. The beach was also meaningful to me because of the amazing sunsets and calming waves; even the lightning was beautiful.

What impact did studying abroad have on you personally?

Studying abroad improved my confidence because I was able to step out of my comfort zone and do things that I was previously scared of. I conquered my fears of the ocean, flying in a plane, being away from home, etc. I now feel unstoppable and ready to travel the world even if it's on my own. Additionally, taking part in a culture other than my own was refreshing and eye-opening. It's amazing to discover different foods, traditions, and lifestyles.

What would you recommend to students considering studying abroad, especially to your country or program?

DO IT! There are so many opportunities offered through studying abroad relating to both academics and personal growth. My program, specifically, was so amazing because you were expected to step out of your comfort zone and learn how to adapt to tropical conditions and everything that comes along with that. You will feel so proud of yourself after accomplishing so much!
