Hawker Culture
Summer 2016 | Hong Kong
"Hawkering is a relic of Hong Kong's past, a past where finding an official job was near impossible. In order to find a livelihood, many residents of Hong Kong has taken to reselling merchandise and raised countless sales stands on the streets. Due to the rising numbers of illegal hawkers on the streets, the Hong Kong government decided to allocate streets for the specific purpose of hawkering. They became the culture of street markets that tourists adore today. It is interesting how a bitter culture became the source of travel entertainment."
