Why study abroad?

The Berkeley School of Education Undergraduate Programs encourages students to take the opportunity to study abroad. For Educational Sciences majors, studying abroad is an invaluable opportunity to examine how learning, pedagogy, and educational equity function in an international framework. Studying abroad allows students to move from theoretical concepts to direct comparative observation, analyzing how different cultures structure schooling, handle educational inequality, and integrate diverse linguistic and cultural communities. 

When can I study abroad?

Educational Sciences majors are encouraged to work with their major adviser to determine the best time to study abroad. 

What classes can I take?

Students can petition Study Abroad courses for academic credit. Courses based in Education: students generally petition between 1–2 courses toward their Educational Sciences degree requirements. Students can meet with an adviser to discuss previously approved courses or to propose any courses of interest. 

Where can I study abroad?

Students may participate in any of the Berkeley Study Abroad programs or independent study abroad programs. However, those who are interested in pursuing independent study abroad programs should consult with an adviser for approval.

No.

Do any courses offered on a Berkeley Summer Abroad or Berkeley Global Internships program currently satisfy requirements within your major?

Students can petition Berkeley Summer Abroad or Global Internships courses for academic credit.

UCEAP Programs Questionnaire

What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during UCEAP? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit?

There is no maximum for major credit given for courses taken during UCEAP, as long as courses have been approved via the petition process.

Does your department maintain a list of courses previously awarded credit on UCEAP and/or a list of pre-approved courses for UCEAP programs? How do students access this information?

The BSE Undergraduate Programs has an internal document of previously approved Study Abroad courses and programs. Students can request an advising appointment to access this information. 

Does your department have a 4-year or 2-year plan available to students that incorporates semester or year-length study abroad?

No.

What is the process in your department to have courses evaluated? What materials must be submitted? What is the timeframe for response?

The elective petition process can be found in our Course Petition forms, located on our website. The timeframe for review and approval is approximately two weeks. 

Are students in your department able to undertake a senior honors thesis the semester following UCEAP participation?

No.

Does your department calculate UCEAP grades into departmental GPA?

Yes.

Are UCEAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

Yes.

If you represent a department that teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the UCEAP program?

Not applicable for this program.

Does the undergraduate adviser sign the UCEAP Academic Planning Form, or must a faculty adviser sign?

The Undergraduate adviser signs. 

Does your department place Academic holds on declared majors prior to each registration period?

No.

Do you have any department specific advice for students participating on a UCEAP program in their last term at Berkeley?

Before participating in a UCEAP program in their last term at UC Berkeley, students must meet with an adviser first to ensure all requirements are satisfied.

Independent Programs Questionnaire

Have any Independent programs been approved by your department and the Study Abroad Advisory board for credit in the major?

The Educational Sciences major has not yet had any independent programs petitioned or approved by our department. 

Are there any pre-approved courses for your major from other UC summer abroad programs (UCLA, UCD, etc.)?

The Educational Sciences major has not yet had any UC Summer Abroad courses petitioned or approved by our department. 

What is the process to have a course from an Independent study abroad program evaluated for your major?

Students can petition courses from an Independent Study Abroad program through the Undergraduate Programs Committee for approval. The student would need to follow the instructions found on the petition forms.
