Advising Resources
Berkeley Programs Questionnaire
No.
There are no pre-approved courses, but students can submit a petition to count any course taken abroad toward the Data Science major.
UCEAP Programs Questionnaire
Data Science currently has no limit on the amount of major credit that students can satisfy with study abroad coursework, other than the L&S residence requirement which requires a minimum of 12 units of upper-division coursework toward the major completed in residence at UC Berkeley.
Yes, students can access the Major Requirement Petition Decision Database through the Data Science Study Abroad Website. Please note that this is not a pre-approved list, but instead the full list of courses that students have previously petitioned to count towards a Data Science major requirement.
Yes. There are sample 4 year and sample 2 and 2.5 year plans available on the Data Science Study Abroad webpage. We still encourage students to speak with a Data Science major advisor about how they may want to incorporate studying abroad into their specific major plans.
Students can email ds-advising@berkeley.edu to request the online Data Science major petition form once they know course options for their study abroad program. Coursework needs to transfer in as a minimum of 3 units of upper division semester credit to satisfy upper division major requirements. Students will need access to the course syllabus and must submit that as part of the petition. Students should petition in advance of studying abroad in order to confirm if their coursework will apply towards the intended major requirement(s) or not. Students can typically expect a petition decision within 2-4 weeks of submitting the petition.
Students can apply to the Data Science Honors Program in the summer prior to the year in which they wish to participate in the program. Students can view details about the Data Science Honors Program.
Yes.
Yes, they do factor into the criteria to graduate with honors.
Not applicable.
Undergraduate advisors sign the UCEAP academic planning form.
No, we do not place department advising holds on declared majors.
There are no specific needs for Data Science majors studying abroad in their graduating term. As would be the case for anyone studying abroad, we encourage students to check in with advisors in advance of their program to address any questions or concerns and to petition any coursework intended to satisfy major requirements.
Independent Programs Questionnaire

No. Courses are reviewed on an individual basis.
The same as for students studying abroad through UCEAP. Once students know of course options for the term in which they plan to study abroad they can email ds-advising@berkeley.edu to request the online Data Science major petition form.
