Berkeley Programs Questionnaire

Does your department currently sponsor a Berkeley Summer Abroad or Berkeley Global Internships program?

No.

Do any courses offered on a Berkeley Summer Abroad or Berkeley Global Internships program currently satisfy requirements within your major?

Yes. Students should check with their ESS adviser to confirm which courses can satisfy requirements.

UCEAP Programs Questionnaire

What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during UCEAP? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit?

Each program is individually discussed with the student's ESS adviser. Courses for the major will have to be evaluated by faculty before course credit can be given. The ESS advisor can determine credit for humanities/social science courses.

Does your department maintain a list of courses previously awarded credit on UCEAP and/or a list of pre-approved courses for UCEAP programs? How do students access this information?

ESS advisers maintain an articulation database that catalogs previously approved and unapproved courses. Students may meet with their ESS adviser to check if their proposed courses have been reviewed previously.

Does your department have a 4-year or 2-year plan available to students that incorporates semester or year-length study abroad? How do students access this information?

No.

What is the process in your department to have courses evaluated? What materials must be submitted? What is the timeframe for response?

Students meet with their ESS adviser to have their planning form reviewed and approved. The ESS advisor can determine credit for humanities/social science courses. If students wish to take courses towards their major requirements, they should gather syllabi for the courses they are interested in taking beforehand (if possible). Courses for the major must be evaluated by faculty in the course department before course credit can be given. Students should talk with their ESS adviser about major course evaluation, as some departments have pre-approved databases, and each department has its own process and timeline.

Are students in your department able to undertake a senior honors thesis the semester following UCEAP participation?

Please consult with an ESS adviser.

Does your department calculate UCEAP grades into departmental GPA?

Yes, if the courses are being used to satisfy upper division major requirements they are calculated into the upper division technical GPA.

Are UCEAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

Yes. Any courses taken through UCEAP that are used towards the student’s major requirements are part of the department and UC GPA.

If you represent a department which teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the UCEAP program?

N/A

Does the undergraduate adviser sign the UCEAP academic planning form, or must a faculty adviser sign?

The ESS Adviser approves the academic planning form. There is no faculty adviser signature required.

Does your department place Academic holds on declared majors prior to each registration period? If yes, what is your departmental policy on releasing advising holds for students currently abroad on UCEAP (e.g. is advising possible via email, skype, etc.)?

Students should be in touch with their ESS advisor prior to the beginning of the registration period to ensure there is no hold on their registration. Online appointments are available for all students on the ESS advising website.

Do you have any department specific advice for students participating on a UCEAP program in their last term at Berkeley?

Students who go abroad in their last semester might delay their graduation. We will waive the college’s senior residency rule for students in UCEAP.

Independent Programs Questionnaire

Have any Independent programs been approved by your department and the Study Abroad Advisory board for credit in the major?

No.

Are there any pre-approved courses for your major from other UC summer abroad programs (UCLA, UCD, etc.)?

No.

What is the process to have a course from an Independent study abroad program evaluated for your major?

Students meet with their ESS adviser to have their planning form reviewed and approved. The ESS advisor can determine credit for humanities/social science courses. If students wish to take courses towards their major requirements, they should gather syllabi for the courses they are interested in taking beforehand (if possible). Courses for the major must be evaluated by faculty in the course department before course credit can be given. Students should talk with their ESS adviser about major course evaluation, as each department has its own process and timeline.
