"I think that the most meaningful thing for me was getting to make connections with people who I think will be lifelong friends who came from all over, from Davis to Stockholm. I look back on my memories of the entire summer as something that I will treasure dearly."

What was the most interesting cultural experience you had abroad?

It is hard to pick just one — the atmosphere surrounding the World Cup was of course very exciting while England was still playing, and it was fun to root for them!

What was the biggest challenge/concern of your study abroad experience? How did you respond?

My good friend became extremely sick while we were in Amsterdam, just a few days before the final exam; I helped her get to the hospital and to get her the supplies she needed when she could not leave her room, and spoke to the course coordinators to try and advocate for her situation.

Describe a typical day for you abroad.

During the week, I would go to 9 am lecture, study with friends at an on-campus cafe, and then go to either lab or workshop until 2 or 3 pm; then I would go into Brighton, study in a cafe or in the public library, and grab dinner and maybe explore the beach or the Laines with friends in the evening. Every weekend was different, and always involved some sort of adventure!

What coursework did you take while abroad? How did courses abroad compare with Berkeley classes?

Physics I and II; the courses were taught at the level of UC Berkeley, but much more rapidly, and due to this fact I felt as if the exams were probably not as challenging.

What was the most memorable/meaningful aspect of your time abroad?

I think that the most meaningful thing for me was getting to make connections with people who I think will be lifelong friends who came from all over, from Davis to Stockholm. I look back on my memories of the entire summer as something that I will treasure dearly.

What impact did studying abroad have on you personally?

I became much more independent! I went abroad directly after freshman year, and because my family lives in San Diego, I was really only ever an eight hour drive from home — but now I feel much more confident in myself and my ability to take initiative and achieve whatever I set out to.

What would you recommend to students considering studying abroad, especially to your country or program?

Bring hot sauce and spices with you if you are going to England. You will really, really, miss them.
