Q&A

"We all came from such different walks of life, but all so similar in our ambitions, everyone was so incredibly smart and helpful, we always supported each other in all our endeavors, both academic and personal."

What led you to study abroad? Why did you choose your country/program?

I chose the Exeter College Summer Programme because, as I transfer student, I wanted to both maximize my time at Berkeley while having a study abroad experience. The Oxford study abroad is additionally only available during the summer and believed it be the perfect opportunity.

Describe a typical day for you abroad.

A typical day in my Oxford study abroad was going to class, grabbing lunch with my friends, studying and going over texts together, grabbing dinner, then heading out to the pub for karaoke!

What coursework did you take while abroad? How did courses abroad compare with Berkeley classes?

I took International Law and International Relations while at Oxford, I didn't find them terribly different from the classes at Berkeley, especially in the testing. However, what made it different is the inclusion of tutorials with your GSI to do case studies or discuss our essay topics.

What was the most memorable/meaningful aspect of your time abroad?

In my program, we all came from different backgrounds. Some people from other UCs, some from schools like Harvard and Yale, and some students from Singapore! We all came from such different walks of life, but all so similar in our ambitions, everyone was so incredibly smart and helpful, we always supported each other in all our endeavors, both academic and personal.

What was the biggest challenge/concern of your study abroad experience? How did you respond?

In my program at Oxford, many of the students came from universities such as Harvard and Yale, at first I really questioned how I would be able to compete academically with them, especially as a transfer student. However, my insecurities were quickly squashed as I soon found out that they are students just like us, they struggle and they sweat about exams to, and all the students in my program were so willing to help each other out when we struggled or just to talk about the concepts more fully.
