Cuba: Beyond the Icons - Race, Gender & Social Change (Postponed)
-
Summary
Summary
Program postponed to Summer 2027 due to an unfolding humanitarian crisis in-country.
The Cuban Revolution has generated some of the most iconic symbols of the power of transformative social movements. Images of Che Guevarra and Fidel Castro with triumphant fists in the air loom large. Inspiring some and infuriating others, they continue to be a part of the progressive imagination. But what forces inspired the Cuban revolution and how do pro-revolutionary people transform a society not only from capitalism to socialism but from structural racism and rigid ideas of gender? Can the legacies of slavery and segregation be eradicated? How does the concept of “race” differ in Cuba than in the U.S? What will the role of women and the LGBTQ+ community be in this evolving nation committed to the ideals of equality?
This program offers an immersive study abroad examination of issues of race, gender, sexuality, and social change in Cuba. Students will critically examine the historical and contemporary experiences of Afro-Cubans, women, LGBTQ+ communities, and related grassroots movements and institutions within the context of historical forces, Cuban social structures, and current geopolitical realities. It offers a critical understanding of the processes of colonization, enslavement, racialization, nationalism, revolution, socialism, gender and sexuality, within the context of U.S. foreign policy and intervention both past and present.
Importantly, by engaging with local communities, scholars, artists, and organizers, students will gain a deeper understanding of Cuba’s social, cultural, and political dynamics and the ways in which resilience, creativity, and activism shape identity and social change.
Highlights include:
- Volunteering at local community centers that preserve the shared traditions between Cuba, Africa, and its diaspora.
- Private Cuban jazz performances at the homes of famous Cuban Jazz musicians.
- Day trips including day trip to Las Terrazas for ecological and cultural immersion including workshops on sustainable living and community-led environmental initiatives This area is part of the Sierra del Rosario, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1985.
