Donna Southard, Ph.D.
Dr. Donna Southard is a Lecturer and Assistant Director of Spanish language instruction in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley. She holds a teaching degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a B.A. from UC Berkeley, where she earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Modern Peninsular Literature. She has taught all levels of Spanish at UC Berkeley and community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Dr. Southard resided in Spain for over twenty years, working as an English teacher and raising two bilingual children. Recognizing that Cantabria's privileged natural setting and rich heritage –largely unexplored by foreigners–is ideally suited for a unique study abroad experience, she designed the Summer Abroad program in conjunction with the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Dr. Southard has served as Program Director since 2012.
