Consult with your Independent Study Abroad program regarding pre-departure requirements, including visa and entry clearance, travel, housing, health, and insurance.
Students who participate on an Independent Study Abroad option should pay special attention to the following UC Berkeley matters before departure:
If you will study on an Independent Study Abroad option for the semester or year, you may apply for a Planned Leave status with the University by submitting a Planned Leave of Absence Form.
The Planned Leave status lets the University know that a student intends to be away for at least a semester, either fall and/or spring, for any non-UC study abroad. With the Planned Leave of Absence, students do not need to file a Readmission Petition for the term following study abroad.
If you are covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), verify your dates of coverage and make arrangements to have insurance for any gaps in coverage between SHIP and your study abroad program.
Contact the UC Berkeley Library regarding library privileges for unregistered students while participating on an Independent Study Abroad option.
You will not have access to the Callisto system during your study abroad term when participating in an Independent Study Abroad option.
You will not be eligible for an AC Transit Class Pass during your study abroad term when participating in an Independent Study Abroad option.
If you are an international student here on a student visa, consult with the Berkeley International Office on whether your participation on an Independent Study Abroad option will impact your visa status.
