Madrid is the capital of Spain and the third-most populous city by urban area in the European Union, after Paris and London. Located on the river Manzanares in the center of the country, Madrid is one of the major financial centers of Southern Europe, and plays an important role in the politics, education, environment, media, science and culture of Spain as well as the rest of Europe.
While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods. Its landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid, the Royal theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House, the Buen Retiro park, the Prado Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
