Berkeley Study Abroad offers a variety of scholarships to aid students in funding their study abroad opportunities.
Berkeley Study Abroad Scholarship
Global Internships Program locations (including domestic), and Summer Abroad Program locations
Scholarship Eligibility:
Participants on this program are eligible for a $1,500 Berkeley Study Abroad Scholarship. You will be automatically considered, no application is necessary. To qualify, you must:
- -Be a current UC Berkeley student (Expected Graduation Date of summer 2024 or later)
- -Have completed a 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act application, and are eligible for financial aid
- -Have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $50,000 or less
- -Have remaining financial need after all other eligible gift aid and scholarships have been calculated towards your program's cost of attendance
- -Enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester units for summer 2024
Summer Abroad: Athens & Paros, Greece location
Scholarship Eligibility:
10 Art Practice Majors who apply to the Berkeley Summer Abroad Athens & Paris program will automatically be awarded a $500 scholarship for the program. To qualify, you must be declared as an Art Practice major, and be one of the first 10 Art Practice majors to apply!

All Berkeley participants in the Berkeley Summer Abroad Ghana: Pan Afrikan Social Movements: Past, Present and Future program will be awarded an additional $1,000 scholarship.
Summer Abroad: Manila, Philippines location
Scholarship Eligibility:
All Berkeley participants in the Berkeley Summer Abroad Manila, Philippines: Narratives of Tradition and Resistance program will be awarded an additional $1,000 scholarship.
Summer Abroad: Puebla, Mexico location
Scholarship Eligibility:
All participants on this program (including visiting students) are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship from the Center for Latin American Studies at UC Berkeley.
Note: if you are a Financial Aid eligible UC Berkeley student, you must have remaining financial need after all other eligible gift aid and scholarships have been calculated towards your program's cost of attendance.
2024-25 UCEAP Fall, Spring and Year programs
Scholarship Eligibility:
Participants on a 2024-25 UCEAP fall, spring or year program are eligible for a $1,500 Berkeley Study Abroad Scholarship per semester of participation. You will be automatically considered, no application is necessary. To qualify, you must:
- -Be a current UC Berkeley (Expected Graduation Date no later than the term of participation)
- -Have completed a 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act application, and are eligible for financial aid
- -With the Department of Education’s significant overhaul of the 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), eligibility and criteria for student aid is changing. The full effects of the new FAFSA and California Dream Act Application (CADAA) will be calculated by UC Berkeley in the Spring of 2024. Information about eligibility for 2024-25 UCEAP fall, spring or year program Berkeley Study Abroad Scholarships will be updated on this website when new criteria determinations have been made. Details about changes to the FAFSA can be found at FAFSA Simplification.

- -Not have received another study abroad scholarship of $1,500 or more for the same term
African Studies
Carl Rosberg and Judith Geist Undergraduate Research Fellowship
The Center for African Studies offers two undergraduate fellowships of up to $3,000 each to support travel to Africa for research and study. Must be current UC Berkeley undergraduate students with an interest in Africa and who will return to campus as a registered student following the research trip.
Haas School of Business
Thomas Tusher Scholarship for Study Abroad
The Thomas Tusher scholarship is intended to support a Haas undergraduate student who is interested in international study. A $7,500 award will be granted to a recipient who has been accepted to a study abroad program (UCEAP or independent study).
Classics
Summer Travel and Study Abroad Awards
The Department of Classics offers a number of study and travel awards for undergraduate students pursuing Classics abroad and/or traveling to classical lands.
Environmental Design
Michael Ho Memorial Travel Scholarship
The College of Environmental Design offers an annual travel scholarship of $1,200 to an undergraduate in his or her junior year majoring in architecture at CED.
Judith Lee Stronach Undergraduate Travel Scholarship
The College of Environmental Design offers summer and winter scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or sustainable environmental design in the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley.
European Studies
Foreign Language and Area Studies Awards
Enables students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to acquire a high level of competence in one or more foreign languages. Fellowships are awarded to students in modern foreign language and area studies, with priority given to students in the humanities, social sciences, and professional fields.
French Studies
Carol Dolcini Study Abroad Flight Fund
Thanks to the generosity of alumni donors, Berkeley’s French Department is pleased to offer two or more annual scholarships to students planning to study abroad in full immersion French-speaking programs. The purpose of this scholarship is to help defray travel costs. It is named in honor of our longtime and recently retired Undergraduate Student Affairs Officer Carol Dolcini, who made it her mission to bring the experience of study abroad to as many undergraduates as possible.
Eligibility:
-Students must be accepted into a full-immersion study abroad program in France or other Francophone countries.
-Priority status will be given to students declared in the French major or French minor.
Examples of eligible programs: UCEAP study at Univ. of Lyon; UCEAP study at Univ. of Bordeaux; UCEAP study (in French) at Institut des Études Politiques (“Sciences Po”), Paris; Global Internship, Paris; IFE Field Research & Internship, Paris, Belgium or Strasbourg.

Middle Eastern Studies
Foreign Language and Area Studies Awards
Enables students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to acquire a high level of competence in one or more foreign languages. Fellowships are awarded to students in modern foreign language and area studies, with priority given to students in the humanities, social sciences, and professional fields.
The Center for Middle Eastern Studies supports research and travel by undergraduate students who demonstrate a high level of distinction in Middle Eastern Studies. Grants for up to $5,000 are available to defray the cost of international travel to conduct research on Middle East-related topics or to support an overseas study of Middle Eastern languages.
Sultan Program in Arab Studies
Scholarships up to $1,200 are available to UC Berkeley undergraduates working on projects and theses related to Arab Studies may apply for scholarships to support research or conference travel, overseas or domestic summer Arabic language study, and/or internships.
South Asia Studies

Airola-Murveit Family Student Award
The Airola-Murveit Family Student Award helps UC Berkeley students participate in UCEAP, with a preference to students who are non-native speakers of their study abroad country language. Participants are automatically considered for the award—no application is necessary.
Allan Buch Scholarship Fund for Study Abroad
The Allan Buch Scholarship Fund for Study Abroad supports scholarships for UC Berkeley students participating in UCEAP to the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. Applicants for the English Universities program will be contacted by their BSA program adviser with instructions on how to apply for this competitive scholarship opportunity.
Harry W. Lucheta Fund for Study Abroad Scholarships
The Harry W. Lucheta Fund for Study Abroad supports scholarships to help UC Berkeley students participate in UCEAP, with a preference to students who wish to study in Italy. Participants are automatically considered for the award—no application is necessary.
UC Education Abroad Program Scholarships
UCEAP offers over 10 types of scholarships for all categories of participants and for a comprehensive range of programs. Students only need to submit a Global Scholarships application for most awards.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Awards scholarships of up to $5,000 to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study or internship programs worldwide. An additional Critical Need Language Award of $3,000 is available to applicants who will be studying a critical need language abroad.
Boren Awards for International Study
Provides scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Critical Language Scholarship Program
The CLS Program provides opportunities for American college and university students to study languages and cultures essential to America's engagement with the world.
Each summer, American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities across the country, spend eight to ten weeks learning one of fourteen languages at an intensive study abroad institute. The CLS Program is designed to promote rapid language gains and essential intercultural fluency in regions that are critical to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.
The Diverse International Women Of Color Study Abroad Scholarship
The Diverse International Women Of Color Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.
DIWC will award (3) $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to an in-person summer study abroad program.
We believe conventional scholarship requirements such as age, grade point average, and essays reduce diversity in study abroad by severely limiting the number of students who qualify for funding. Qualifications for First Trip scholarships awards are minimal.
Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships
The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
The Going Study Abroad Scholarship is open to any citizen and/or resident of the United States (and its territories and possessions) who is enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning.
IES Abroad Disability Grant Application
To enhance study abroad opportunities for students with disabilities, IES Abroad offers grants to students whose disabilities may add significant costs to their study abroad experience. Only students who study abroad on an IES Abroad program which is an independent program administered outside of Berkeley Study Abroad and UCEAP.
The NAFSA Rainbow Scholarship awards deserving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQIA+) students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. To be considered for the Rainbow Scholarship, applicants must self-identify on the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarship application.
Study Abroad Travel Grants for Young Women
The College Women's Club offers grants of up to $1,000 to young women for travel to institutions or research meetings, for the purpose of furthering the young women's expertise in her course of study. Eligible candidates will be 18 years or older and either a resident of the of Berkeley, California area; attending an accredited Berkeley, California-based U.S. institution of higher education; or a recent graduate with plans for post-graduate education. Brazil
Brazilian Initiation Scholarship
The Brazilian Studies Association invites applications from graduate and undergraduate students for a one-time $1,500 travel scholarship to do exploratory research in Brazil. This scholarship targets aspiring Brazilianists with relatively little or no experience in Brazil.
Canada
Provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. The program offers a cash award of $10,000 ($5,000 per semester) as well as an allowance of $500 to offset health insurance costs. In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant in an amount not to exceed $800.
Denmark
Novo Nordisk International Talent Program
Novo Nordisk International Talent Program is a scholarship programme set up to assist students from the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), including UC Berkeley, and The University of Sydney in a range of selected academic fields seeking to study abroad at the University of Copenhagen.
The Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship
Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship (UMRSC) offers scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for U.S. students studying in Denmark.
Germany
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships
Highly qualified undergraduates are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research, and/or internships in Germany for four to ten months.
Israel
MASA Israel Grants & Scholarships
Offers universal grants and need-based scholarship awards for young adults to travel to Israel. Includes awards of $1,000 to study abroad participants and $3,000-$4,500 awards to eligible participants over the age of 21.
Japan
The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 for a semester or $4,000 for academic year programs. Students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.
Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for U.S. Citizens
Several different kinds of scholarships are offered by the Japanese government for international students studying in Japan. Students holding Japanese passports are not eligible for these scholarships.
New Zealand
Generation Study Abroad Excellence and Travel Awards
Education New Zealand and New Zealand tertiary institutions offer $2,000 Travel Awards to help U.S. students fund their flight to New Zealand. Excellence Awards offer $500 for study at one of the eight New Zealand universities and $500 for study at participating institutes of technology and polytechnics.
Sweden
Swedish Womens' Educational Association (SWEA) Scholarship
In cooperation with the Scandinavian Department at UC Berkeley, SWEA is offering travel stipends to up to five UC Berkeley undergraduate students who are planning to pursue studies in Sweden. These stipends will each be in the amount of $2,000. It is expected that those students who receive a stipend share their experience in Sweden with SWEA.
Switzerland
Think Swiss Research Scholarship
Undergraduate and graduate students wanting to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute can apply a monthly scholarship of CHF 1,050 (approx. USD 1,100) for a period of 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.
United Kingdom
Awards £500 scholarships to undergraduate students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year at a United Kingdom university which is BUTEX affiliated.
Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship
The Association of American Study Abroad Programmes United Kingdom offers a merit-based scholarship of £500 for a semester or term abroad or £1000 for full-year study in the United Kingdom. Must be on a program offered by AASAP/UK full or associate member.
