Basic Information about EAP Participation

Department Name: English

Undergraduate Adviser Name: Ken Mahru

1. Is there a specific time frame in which students are required to declare a major in your department? If yes, when?

YES. WE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO DECLARE BY THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THEIR JUNIOR YEAR. IF NOT THEN, THE SECOND BEST TIME IS BY THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, WHEN THEY NEED TO COME INTO THE OFFICE FOR THEIR ADVISOR CODE. STUDENTS MAY DECLARE AFTER 30 UNITS AND WHEN THEY HAVE COMPLETED R1A AND B AND HAVE TAKEN TWO ENGLISH COURSES: 1)45A OR 45B AND 2) 45C OR SHAKESPEARE (17,117).

2. Does the Undergraduate Adviser (staff) sign the Education Abroad Program academic planning form, or must a faculty adviser (professor) sign?

USUALLY THE UNDERGRADUATE ADVISER (STAFF) SIGNS, AS THEY ARE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE STUDENT'S OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND BEST ADVISE WHAT THEY MAY NEED TO TAKE FOR THE MAJOR, WHILE ABROAD.

3. Should we advise students to make an appointment to have their academic planning form signed in your department? If so, do they need to bring a transcript or any other supplemental materials with them to their appointment?

NOT NECESSARY, NOT APPOINTMENTS ARE GIVEN UNLESS AN EXTREME EMERGENCY. THEY NEED TO BRING THEIR TRANSCRIPT AND BEST, A DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSES THAT THEY PLAN TO STUDY.

4. What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during the education abroad program? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit? Please explain.

8 UNITS OR 2 COURSES IS THE MAX. THE MAXIMUM IS CALCULATED BY BOTH. AS IT IS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO ARTICULATE THE COURSE WORK, WE TRY TO LOOK AT THE LENGTH OF TIME AND THEIR DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE AND WORK, WHICH WE LIKE THEM TO BRING TO US WHEN WE ARE DECIDING THIS MATTER.

5. Are students in your department able to undertake senior honors theses the semester following EAP participation or are there restrictions? Please explain.

STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO TAKE SENIOR HONORS THESIS AFTER THEIR PARTICIPATION IN EAP, (RESTRICTION) SINCE IT IS A TWO SEMESTER COURSE, IT MUST BE TAKEN IN FALL-SPRING IN THAT ORDER OF SEMESTERS AND IN THE SAME SCHOOL YEAR.

6. Does your department calculate EAP grades into the departmental GPA?

NO, WE DON'T ACCEPT ANY TRANSFERRED GRADES, ONLY UCB.

7. Are EAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

NO, BUT THEY ARE CONSIDERED, IF THE STUDENT IS BOARDERLINE IN QUALIFYING.

8. If you represent a department which teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the EAP program? If so, please explain.

N/A

9. Does your department distribute a special information sheet for your majors which includes advice on how to articulate participation with EAP with the major?

WE HAVE A STATEMENT THAT SETS SOME GUIDELINES IN OUR MAJOR "HANDBOOK."

10. If yes, do you also provide this information on your departmental website? What is the URL?

YES, LOOK UNDER SUB-HEADINGS: ADDITIONAL NOTES: EDUCATION ABROAD PROGRAMS.

http://english.berkeley.edu/student/handbook_2003.html

11. Finally, most EAP students are required to officially declare their major before departure. Returning EAP students who attempt to register through Tele-BEARS from abroad need adviser codes to pre-enroll for courses. What is your departmental policy on releasing advisor codes (AC's) to EAP students?

IF THEY EMAIL US, WE WILL SEND THEM THE CODE BACK. OFTEN, THEY MAY WANT TO APPLY FOR SPECIAL SENIOR COURSEWORK AND THERE IS AN APPLICATION FOR THOSE COURSES THAT MUST BE IN BY THE SECOND TO LAST WEEK IN APRIL. WE TRY TO ALERT THEM TO THIS POSSIBILITY AND TELL THEM TO EMAIL US AND WE WILL SEND THEM AN ATTACHMENT, WHICH THEY MAY COMPLETE AND MAIL BACK TO US. IN CASE OF THE HONORS SEMINAR (H195A/B), THEY ALSO NEED TO SEND A WRITING SAMPLE OF WORK THEY HAVE DONE FOR A CLASS. SO STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO ACCESS SUCH AND SEND IT ALONG AS WELL.
