Non-EAP Programs

Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad provides in-office advising services for the University of California Education Abroad Program (EAP). At this time we do not have staff resources to provide advising for non-EAP programs, but we have some helpful suggestions to introduce you to non-EAP options.

First, please read the Office of Undergraduate Admissions flier for UC Berkeley students planning to study abroad in non-UC sponsored programs.

Check out links to Non-EAP Study and Work Abroad websites.

Below you will find a brief outline of the differences between EAP and Non-UC sponsored programs:

Grades:

EAP:
Grades from EAP are posted on UC Berkeley transcripts and calculated into your Berkeley overall GPA.

Non-UC Program:
Grades from non-UC sponsored programs and host institutions are not posted on UC Berkeley transcripts and are not calculated in the Berkeley overall GPA. Be sure to obtain a transcript from the institution you attended as proof of your grades.

Coursework:

EAP:
EAP courses are listed individually on UC Berkeley transcripts.

Non-UC Program:
Courses are not listed individually on UC Berkeley transcripts from non-UC sponsored programs. Submit an official transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools (OUARS) from the institution attended to request transfer credit for courses completed.

Units:

EAP:
On UC Berkeley transcripts, EAP units are listed for each course and are included in Berkeley overall unit totals.

Non-UC Program:
Only the total units granted for non-UC sponsored courses are posted on UC Berkeley transcripts along with the name of the institution and date of completion.

Registration Status:

EAP:
EAP participants have UC Berkeley continuing student status during EAP participation.

Non-UC Program:
Non-UC sponsored participants must cancel their registration for the period of study abroad either by calling TeleBEARS or by filing a Notice of Cancellation with the Registrar's Office and file a readmission petition by the stated deadline to attend a future semester. Readmission puts the student back into the system so that TeleBEARS information can be issued.

Financial Aid:

EAP:
EAP participants' financial aid status continues while abroad. The Financial Aid Office adjusts the amount of the award to the cost of living on each particular EAP program.

Non-UC Program:
Non-UC sponsored participants do not have UC student status, and therefore, they may be ineligible for California State Aid.
Students should check with the Financial Aid Office. However, federal financial aid may be available through the Federal Family Education Loan Program or Federal Pell Grants, if you qualify for such assistance. Obtain an application for Off-Campus Enrollment from the Financial Aid Office.

University, College, and Major or Minor Requirements:

EAP:
EAP courses automatically count as credit toward graduation. Departmental major advisers determine which credit for EAP coursework will fulfill major or minor requirements; college advisers (L&S, etc.) determine which credit will fulfill university or college requirements.

Non-UC Program:
Transfer credit for non-UC sponsored courses taken abroad is determined by OUARS. Departmental major advisers determine which credit granted by OUARS will fulfill major or minor requirements; college advisers (L&S, etc.) determine which credit granted by OUARS will fulfill university or college requirements. Students participating in non-UC sponsored programs are urged to consult with their major and/or college adviser to determine which courses and grades will be accepted to fulfill requirements. Certain major departments require a letter grade of A or B, for example. OUARS determines the comparable U.S. grade for non-UC sponsored courses.
