Parents: EAP Health Insurance vs. SHIP Insurance

While on EAP, you have the option of having only the mandatory EAP health insurance or having both the EAP insurance and SHIP (the Student Health Insurance Plan offered by UC Berkeley). Each person's needs differ, but here are a few reasons that past students have viewed having both the EAP and SHIP coverage as beneficial:

  • Some students may find a gap in coverage between the ending date of their EAP insurance and the beginning date of their SHIP insurance, or vice versa. By continuing SHIP while on EAP, this gap is eliminated.
  • EAP insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions is limited, and there are various exclusions in coverage (see your EAP General Information guide).
  • SHIP offers dental coverage. There is no dental coverage with the EAP insurance.

SHIP coverage for fall semester begins on August 15 and ends on January 14. Spring SHIP coverage begins on January 15 and ends on August 14.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT SHIP FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR PROGRAM:

The SHIP waiver form for fall semester will be available on-line in mid-July, with a submission deadline of August 15. For spring semester, the deadline to submit a waiver is January 15. You will need a Cal Net I.D. and password to access the form. Use your SID# and the password you use to access BearFacts.

The SHIP waiver form must be completed and submitted on-line.
