1. Is there a specific time frame in which students are required to declare a major in your department? If yes, when?

YES. THEY MUST DECLARE OUR MAJOR THE SEMESTER THEY ARE EXCEEDING 70 UNITS. TRANSFER STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED ONE SEMESTER BEFORE HAVING TO DECLARE THEIR MAJOR.

2. Does the Undergraduate Adviser (staff) sign the Education Abroad Program academic planning form, or must a faculty adviser (professor) sign?

UNDERGRADUATE ADVISERS SIGN THE EAP PROGRAM ACADEMIC PLANNING FORM.

3. Should we advise students to make an appointment to have their academic planning form signed in your department? If so, do they need to bring a transcript or any other supplemental materials with them to their appointment?

WE HAVE AN "OPEN DOOR" POLICY, SO STUDENTS PLANNING FOR TIME ABROAD ARE FREE TO DROP IN AT ANY TIME WE ARE HERE. IF THEY ARE IN OUR MAJOR, WE HAVE INFORMATION WE NEED IN THE OFFICE. IF THEY ARE NOT YET DECLARED, IT WOULD BE NICE IF THEY BROUGHT A TRANSCRIPT WITH THEM WHEN THEY COME BY TO SEE US.

4. What is the maximum amount of major credit given for courses taken during the education abroad program? Is this maximum calculated by number of courses or by units of credit? Please explain.

NO MORE THAN 8 UNITS OF CREDIT FOR COURSES TAKEN ABROAD WILL BE COUNTED TOWARD THE UPPER DIVISION TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR.

5. Are students in your department able to undertake senior honors theses the semester following EAP participation or are there restrictions? Please explain.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN OUR HONORS PROGRAM ARE ELIGIBLE TO WORK ON THEIR PROJECT PAPERS WHENEVER THEY ARE PREPARED TO DO SO. NORMALLY THIS OCCURS DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR. WE REQUIRE DELIVERY OF AN ARCHIVABLE PROJECT REPORT BEFORE STUDENTS LEAVE BERKELEY AFTER FINISHING THEIR DEGREE. SO, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR AN EAP STUDENT TO UNDERTAKE AND COMPLETE THEIR HONORS RESEARCH UPON RETURN TO THE US. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO DO IT OVERSEAS, OR START THE WORK ELSEWHERE AND FINISH IT HERE.

6. Does your department calculate EAP grades into the departmental GPA?

YES.

7. Are EAP grades counted towards departmental honors?

YES.

8. If you represent a department which teaches foreign language, does your department award major credit for the courses taken during the Intensive Language Program (ILP) portion of the EAP program? If so, please explain.

N/A

9. Does your department distribute a special information sheet for your majors which includes advice on how to articulate participation with EAP with the major?

NO.

10. If yes, do you also provide this information on your departmental website? What is the URL?

NO, BUT WE WOULD PUT IT ON THE WEBSITE IF WE DID PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION.

11. Finally, most EAP students are required to officially declare their major before departure. Returning EAP students who attempt to register through Tele-BEARS from abroad need adviser codes to pre-enroll for courses. What is your departmental policy on releasing advisor codes (AC's) to EAP students?

WE RELEASE AC'S TO STUDENTS ABROAD VIA EMAIL. WE DO ASK THEM TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO US ABOUT WHAT COURSES THEY PLAN TO TAKE UPON THEIR RETURN, AND ALSO CHECK TO SEE WHAT, IF ANY, COURSES TAKEN WHILE ON EAP THEY HOPE TO APPLY TOWARD THEIR MAJOR.

OTHER COMMENTS:

MOST OF OUR STUDENTS DO NOT TAKE COURSES THAT APPLY TO THEIR MAJOR WHILE OVERSEAS. HOWEVER, AS WE SEE MORE PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM IT IS POSSIBLE THIS WILL NO LONGER BE THE CASE. THERE ARE ISSUES THAT WILL COME UP THAT WILL BE ADDRESSED WHEN NECESSARY.
